Little Amal Visiting Sheffield
We all have a part to play in building a welcoming and inclusive society not least schools which play a vital role in supporting children seeking sanctuary in our communities.
City of Sanctuary Sheffield can help your school to sign up for the School of Sanctuary award and join the 350 other schools in the UK which are already accredited Schools of Sanctuary
Many schools, especially those already supporting refugee and asylum seeking families, will be welcoming places for them, with second-language provision and resources reflecting cultural diversity. Others will have ‘trauma informed’ accreditation. Some will have food, toy and clothes banks.
School staff, parents and governors are increasingly aware of the importance and respect we can give to such families and acknowledge their often difficult journeys and can pass on such attitudes to their pupils
In gaining accreditation, schools can use any examples of provision and activities already in place:
- Using personal stories
- Celebrating difference and integrating this into many areas of the curriculum
- Making families aware of any help available
- Promoting access to out-of-school and community activities
- Posting positive stories on the school website.
